Bowel Cancer Awareness
ColoAlert: At-Home Bowel Cancer Screening Test
Earlier answers
The conversation that saves lives is the one we keep avoiding.
A simple stool test that looks for the earliest signs of bowel cancer — from home.
Collect a small sample at home, post it to the lab, and get your results securely.
• Collect at home in about 5 minutes
• Combines stool-DNA markers with a haemoglobin (FIT) test
• Analysed by Biovis, an ISO 15189-accredited European laboratory
• Results in 10–14 days
The reality
A disease defined by timing
Bowel cancer is the UK's fourth most common cancer and its second-biggest cancer killer after lung cancer. Sources: Cancer Research UK, Bowel Cancer UK, Pall Mall Medical.
42,000+
new cases of bowel cancer in the UK every year
120
people diagnosed in the UK every single day
46
lives lost to bowel cancer each day
9 in 10
survive when it's caught at the earliest stage
Who it’s for
ColoAlert may suit you if you’re under 50 and outside NHS screening; want testing between NHS rounds; have a family history of bowel cancer or polyps; or want a more thorough at-home option than a standard FIT. This is a screening test, not a diagnosis, and does not replace advice from your doctor. If you have symptoms that worry you, contact your GP or call 111 — don’t wait for a test result.
How it works
1. Order online.
2. Collect a small stool sample at home (about 5 minutes, no diet change).
3. Post to the lab in the prepaid packaging.
4. Get your report in 10–14 days.
What it measures: ColoAlert combines analysis of tumour-DNA markers shed into stool with a faecal immunochemical (haemoglobin) test, so it can flag cancers a blood-only test may miss.
Q: Is ColoAlert available on the NHS?
A: No — the NHS uses a FIT kit for ages 50 to 74. ColoAlert is private and available at any age.
Q: Do I need diet or medication changes? A: No special diet is needed. Q: What if my result is positive? A: See your GP to arrange a colonoscopy.
Q: How much does it cost and how fast are results?
A: £324.99, results in 10–14 days.
If your symptoms are persistent, don't presume the worst — but don't ignore them either. Talk to your GP. If you're over 60, eat a lot of processed meat, or have a family history of bowel cancer, your risk is higher and earlier checks matter more.
